5. Factual Description and Report Writing


 Report Writing

A report is usually a piece of factual writing, based on evidence, containing information on a particular topic. It is formal in nature and is written for a specific purpose. A reports can be of many kinds, e.g. reporting news/ events/messages/experiences/ experiments/ meetings/interviews/ business activities, etc.

Type of report:-
On the basis of your examination purpose the reports are of two types:
(a). Newspaper reports
(b). Reports for school magazine or school newsletter.

Newspaper Reports

1.    You have witnessed a road accident on Mathura Road, Delhi. You are Amar/Amrita, a reporter of the New Indian Express, Delhi. Write a report on the accident in 125 words to, be published in the newspaper.

 Delhi-March 20, 2025
One was killed and ten were injured when a truck collided with a tourist bus on Delhi – Mathura Road yesterday. The accident took place in peak hours when office goers were rushing towards their offices. The tourist bus was coming towards Delhi in a great speed. A cyclist, tried to cross the road in hurry at the intersection. The bus driver tried to save him and turned the bus to the other side. But unluckily it hit a truck which was coming in a speed from the other side. The bus driver lost control over his bus and collided with the truck. The front portion of the bus was badly smashed. The bus driver was killed instantly and 10 passengers were seriously injured who were immediately admitted to the nearby Holy Family Hospital. The collision was fatal.


2. you have attended a meeting in a number of people spoke about the increasing crime-rate in India. You are Pradeep/Pratibha, a reporter of the Times of India, Dehradun. Write a report to be published in about 125 words, expressing your views and suggestions.

  A meeting on lawlessness in the country was held by Bar Association, Mumbai and Public Welfare Association along with many eminent personalities. Lawlessness and chaotic state is reigning the whole country were the general views expressed by the speakers in the meeting. The alarming increase in the crime rate has created havoc everywhere. Thefts, eve-teasing, gang-wars, murders child-kidnapping for ransom, chain-snatching, rapes have surpassed the previous records.
 Every law-abiding citizen is scared of bad elements commented the renowned lawyer, J.N. Palkiwala. He said that any moment anybody is caught unaware.  Servant and tenant verification and neighbourhood watch schemes are very important. Police patrolling and check on criminals is very essential. In the meeting, to curb the crime the need for more alery police force was felt by the participants.


3. You have witnessed a fire accident in a busy market-place. As a reporter of the National Herald, Delhi, draft a report in 125 words. Sign as Raj/Rajni.

New Delhi,May 21, 2025
At about 11.00 a.m. yesterday when the famous Lajpat Rai’s electronic market was setting for the days business, dense fumes were suddenly noticed by a passerby who informed the shopkeepers and the police constable. The shopkeepers came out and started collecting and throwing water on the fire. People started getting panicky. The fire-brigade reached the spot after one hour due to the narrow by lanes. The damage was already done. The shopkeepers were helplessly watching the inferno of fire. After three hours of struggle, the fire could be brought under control. It completely devastated nearly five shops. The property worth Rs. 10 crore was destroyed. But there was no loss of life.
 The fire broke out in the kitchen of a hotel. A cylinder exploded and engulfed the nearly electronic goods shop. The hotel owner was arrested under the act of negligence.

Dehradun, 8 July,
Yesterday I want to the government hospital, Dehradun to see my relative who was admitted there. The relative whom we call uncle got his leg fractured in a road accident. When I went there,he was taken into the operation theatre. I had to see him, therefore I made a round in the ward. The nurses were busy in busy in discharging their duty faithfully and sincerely. To speak the truth the presence of nurses diminish the sufferings of the patients. The guardians of the patients congest the ward. Meanwhile my uncle came on the stature. When he looked at me, he smiled and I answered with a great smile. He told me that it would take him at least a month to get relieved from the hospital. I realised that the treatment of the patients was done sincerely. Also, I realised that number of patients outdid the accommodation and the staff.

The " Green Compaign", an NGO from the south organised awareness towards planting more trees. If a saplings is grown, it takes some time for catching new roots in the soil and then new purplr green leaves appear which elate the heart of grower. The members of this compaign asked the general public to participate in growing more trees. They coded our ancient scriptures like Vedas where there is a great glory of the trees sung in melodious hymns. Environmental effect is the most important role which trees do play. The taught the children to know the value of trees and maintain of environmental purity. Campaign was a great success in encouraging to grow more greenery.

Our school celebrated cleanliness week in a gala way between 7th of September and 14th September. Many boy and girl students took keen interest and participated in this campaign enthusiastically. Many activities were allotted to different students faculty-wise. Today cleanliness has become a motto of Indian Government as well. Our school boys and girls gave their contribution to fulfill this great motto. Walls were decorated by pictures of great Indian leaders and saints after whitewashing them.
In the same duration inter- house competition were organised under  the auspices of guidance of our learned Principal. At the closing function, awards were distributed to prize winning performers.-Secretary of Student's Council

Our school celebrated the 'Children' Day' this year as usual. All the students and teachers assembled in the college auditorium. Our principal shed light on the life of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. He loved children most, hence his birthday is celebrated as "Children's Day'. Then he raised the slogan Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru - Live forever. Students anecdotes from the life of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Many students brought out the achievement of Pt. Nehru as the first prime minister of independent India. He was such an important person in the Indian politics that people raised question. " Who after Nehru?" Our class teacher drew some lesson from Nehru's life for the students. We promised to follow them in our life. The celebration was lively.

All the students in their uniforms assembled in the groung where the tricolour was to be hoisted. The staff was also there. All stood in attention posture. The principal hoisted the tricolour. All clapped. The slogans were shouted. Tricolour song was sung. All the students sat down. Some speeches were given by the teachers and principal how we got this day. It was a red letter day in the history of India. The messages from the director of Education and the Education Minister were read out before the audience. Some boys recited poems, some sung patriotic songs. The Principal put us on oath to serve Mother India. Then the sweets distributed. We went home with "laddus"in our mouth.

'Morning Assembly' is a regular feature of our school. All the students class-wise and the girls make separate lines. Class teachers stand behind their respective class. Other teachers stand in the portico where the Principal stands. The P.T.I. cautions the students to stand in attention posture. The school prayer is sung by the prayer leaders in the accompaniment of the musical instruments. When the prayer is over, the P.T.I. cautions the students to stand at ease. Some slogans are shouted. Then the Principal gives some message to the students. A teacher speaks on value education and gives moral lessons.Then the student go to their respective classes and the morning assembly disperses. It is a calm and severe atmosphere.

We went to Lucknow in Dussehra holidays and visited the zoo there. First we visited the monkey house. A black monkey was the noisiest. Next we moved to the stag corner. Some stags had brouched horns, and some were without any. Then we went to the snake corner. We saw the Indian python. Most snakes were in glass cages. We saw rhinoceros. It was a dangerous dirty wild animal. It was throwing mud on its body. Then we saw the lions, tigers and panthers. They were kept in concrete cages with iron door. They were roaring. we saw birds. They were different colours and sizes. They attracted our attention. We saw elephants. Mother elephants and their calves were worth seeing. The visit was valuable and interesting.

A District Quiz Contest was held on the 15th of October, 20--. A team, consisting of two members, from our school took part in this contest. It was a very interesting contest in which twenty other teams from all over the district took part. The contest was held on the knockout system in which our team was luck enough to reach the finals. Our opponents in the finals were a very strong team, but we outsmarted them in the final decisive rounds. They were leading by 20 points at the end of the third round. But in the fourth and fifth rounds, we had a sort of walkover since our opponents, in their over-enthusiasm, gave almost all their answers wrong. We won the contest by a comfortable margin of 8 points. The glittering trophy now adorns the Principal's office.

I am glad to report that our team has won the running trophy in the Inter-school Quiz Contest. There were three rounds of questions. The first round included questions on sports, the second on music and the third on general knowledge. There were two other teams in the contest, one from Shiv Dayal School and the other from Lady Fatima School. In the first round the SD’s were leading. But in the final round Kapil Sharma showed remarkable presence of mind, and we won the contest. The team trophy awarded to us has been presented to the worthy Principal.

HELP FOR FLOOD-AFFECTED PEOPLE
A Charity show was conducted by our school in aid of the flood affected people of Assam. The show was conducted by the Cultural Society of the school. As part of the show a fete and a one-act play were organized. All the students put in their best to make the show a success. Tickets for the fete and the play were sold in advance. A   good amount of money was collected by way of some interesting games at the fete. The entire collection of Rs. 19650/- was sent through a Demand Draft to the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund.

The talk was given by Dr. Arvind Sharma. His talk was very interesting and informative. He told the students about different kinds of computers and their use in our present day life. He impressed upon the students to take maximum advantage of their new computer wing and gain some elementary knowledge about the working of computers. This new computer wing is going to help the students a great deal.

A Blood Donation Camp was organized in the school hall on the occasion of the School’s Annual Day. Three doctors and six nurses of the local Civil Hospital offered their services for it. A large number of teachers and students donated blood with beaming faces and proud hearts. Some of the guests and visitors were also motivated to donate blood. Two hundred and seventy bottles of blood were collected. All the collected blood was sent to the Army Hospital to help save the precious lives of our brave jawans.

Water is precious. Water is life, Some scientists even go to the extent of saying that the third world war may be fought on the issue of water. Various organizations in central Haldwani conducted a campaign to create awareness among people to conserve water. Local agencies conducted many save water to face the shortage in the summer months. Rain water is a gift form God. We should harvest it. Many experts gave speeches how to conserve water. Many of them was harvesting rain water . They explained how every family could conserve rain water. Rain water may be used for toilets, washing clothes, cleaning floors and cars. Then the running water we get from the municipality would be sufficient for drinking and kitchen purpose.

November 2, 2019. It was indeed a moment of great pride for me to win the first prize at State level in an linter school oratorial competition conducted by the Government of India. The topic of the oratory was 'Women Empowerment' which is one of the most important issue of today. Almost half of our country's population comprises women but unfortunately their partition in different spheres of society is very low. Even toady women are treated as second rate citizens and deprived of education and basic health facilities in most rural and a few urban areas. Successive Governments at the centre have still failed to pass the law elated when I received the first prize form the Chief Minister of Uttrakhand.

November 14 is celebrated as children's Day. This is the birth date of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. The smallest boy of the school was chosen as the Chief Guest. He hoisted the tri-colour and the antional anthem was sung thereafter. There were about 15 participants who spoke about the life of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Many orators explanied why November 14 is celebrated as children of the world are alike and the same. The red rose was favourite with Pt. Nehru So the Chief Guest also wore the red rose as the button flower. He asked the students to emulate Pt. Nehru . He asked that every student should love another . And this was the true tribute to Pt. Nehru . The notable thing of the day was that every students was dressed like Pt. Nehru. How beautiful was the scene! The photographers took snaps of he different speakers for the school magazine.

Arya Inter College, Bahadrabad  celebrated 's green week'-august  16 to 22. The members of he youth club planted a number of seedlings  in the college campus and around it. the other boys followed the suit. They pledged that the seedlings planted would survive. The guest lecturers gave speech on environment. The members of the club organized 'nukked nataks' of create awareness among the people.

It is heartening and pleasant to note that more and more people are becoming aware about their personal health and Beauty, Consequently, this has led to mushrooming health clubs and beauty parlours. The residents of your colony, Prem Nagar , Roorkee held a seminar in which eminent personalities expressed their views on the growing awareness of health and beauty. People have realized that the keynote to maintaining healthy life is to remain fit and free from ailments. And what better way to maintain good health than to join a health club. Similarly  there is awareness among people to look good and beautiful. This has paved the way for cropping up of beauty parlours even in residential areas.  A house in my neighborhoods caught fire in the wee hours on Sunday . All of us were sleeping . I suddenly heard cries outside.  I ran out in panic. In found that the house opposite mine was on fire. I rang up the fire brigade. They reached within ten minutes. The fire Staff worked efficiently. They brought out all the inmates of the house. Among them They brought out all the inmates of the house. Among them was a child of one year. It took two hours to put out the fire. There was not much loss of property because of the fire. There was not much loss of property because of the prompt  help rendered by the people of the street and the fire staff.

The taj Mahal is situated on the left bank of the river Jamuna. There are four minarets on the four corners of the raised quadrilateral  platform. the main clamber in the mausoleum is eight sided in shape. It has a lofty dome. The Taj is built of white marble. The graves of both the King Shah Jahan  and the Queen Mumtaj Mahal are in the vault of the Taj Mahal. We saw the replica of the graves first. Then we descended down and saw the real graves. A two-fold stone pathway leads to the main mausoleum through a beautiful garden. 

Q.22. Your school has recently shifted the school library to a spacious hall with many facilities and it draws more students thus promoting reading habit among students. You are XYZ, the school pupil leader. Write a factual description of the new library in not more than 100 words.

Our school has recently shifted its library to the new Block. spacious hall can accommodation more then 150 students at a time. A large number of books on varied topics have been further added to the library. This library draws more students and will definitely help promote reading habits among them. The library building has large windows on the sides and the interior of the building is well lit up by sunlight throughout the day. The books are stacked neatly and properly in the brand new racks and book shelves. This library is indeed most ideal place where one can sit for ours together and read.
