3. KEEPING QUIET - PABLO NERUDA

KEEPING QUIET- PABLO NERUDA

ABOUT THE POET
Pablo Neruda
Pablo Neruda (1904-1973)is the pen name of Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto who was born in the town of Parral in Chile. Neruda`s poems are full of easily understood images which make them no less beautiful.
He won the Nobel Prize for literature in the year 1971. In the poem Neruda talks about the necessity of quite introspection and creating a feeling of mutual understanding among human beings.

MAIN POINTS OF THE POEM

  1.  The poet asks us to count to twelve and not to make any movement during this time. He asks us to stop for a second and not to move our arms even.
  2. He says that by doing this, we shall experience a very useful feeling. We shall feel no hurry to worry. There shall be complete silence. We shall suddenly feel a strange togetherness with all others.
  3. This quiet introspection will lead everyone to come out of there greed, selfishness and cruelty. Warmongers will give up their lust for war and start living like brothers.
  4. The poet says that his advocacy of silence and stillness should not be confused with total inactivity. In fact, what he says is connected with life, not with death. And the very essence of life is activity.
  5. The poet says that this little stillness and silence leads us to a better and fresh coarse of further activity.Without it, we shall never be able to understand ourselves and then we shall be as good as dead.
  6. the poet gives an example to show how little stillness and silence can lead to new and better life. he give the example of the earth itself.
  7. When it is winter, the earth is so still and silent that it seems to be dead. But later in spring, it is proved that it is alive, not dead. It has new beauties and colours added to it. Similarly, after a little stillness and silence of introspection, man can resume his activity in a fresh and better manner.

Summary of the poem
In this poem, the poet brings out the importance of quite introspection. It can transform not only the life of an individual but also the face of the earth. Pablo Neruda says that it does not need much time to within and examine oneself. During this time of introspection, one should keep still and say nothing at all. It will give him a strange feeling of togetherness with all other. He will come out of all kinds of selfishness and cruelty. Thus a man will win peace not only for himself but also for all the worlds. There will be no was and all men will live like brothers.
The poet says that his advocacy of quietness and stillness should not be confused with total inactivity.

Now we will count to twelve
And we will all keep still
For once on the face of the earth
Let`s not  speak in any language,
Let`s stop for one second,
And not move our arms so much.
It would be an exotic moment
      Without rush,without engines,
We would all be together
      In a sudden strangeness.
Fishermen in the cold sea
      Would not  harm whales
And the man gathering salt
Would look at his hurt hands.
Those who prepare green wars,
Wars with gas, wars with fire,
would put on clean cloths
and walk about with their brothers
in the shad,doing nothing.
What i want should not be confused
with total inactivity.
Life is what it is about:
I want no truck with death.
If we were not so single -minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
and of threatening ourselves with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.
Now I will count up to twelve
and you keep quit and I will go.
