Adrienne Rich
Main Points of the poem:
- In this poem, the poet brings out the miserable plight of a married woman in a common household.
- Ant Jenifer is embroidering tigers in wool. The tigers are prancing across the screen. They look bright yellow in the midst of green trees. There are some men beneath the tree. The tigers are not afraid of these men.
- The tiger are pacing across in the screen in graceful chivalry. Aunt Jennifer's fingers are fluttering through the wool.She finds it hard to pull out the ivory needle. She feels as if her hands fails to work under Uncle's pressure. She can do nothing without his command.
- The poet imagines that when Aunt Jenifer dies, her terrified hands will still be ringed with her usual chores. The tiger in the panel will proudly prance across the screen while Aunt Jennifer would be lying lifeless in her grave.
Poem
Ant Jenifer's tigers prance across a screen,
Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.
They do not fear the men beneath the tree;
They pace in sleek chivalric certainly.
Aunt Jennifer's finger fluttering through the wool
Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.
The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band
Sits heavily upon the Aunt Jennifer's hand
When Aunt is dead, Her terrified hand will lie
still ringed with ordeal she was mastered by.
The tiger in the panel that she made
will go on prancing proud and unafraid.
